ART OF ANCIENT GREECE
During the middle of the fifth century B.C. the white ground technique
was commonly used for lekythoi, oil flasks placed on graves, and for
fine vases of other shapes. For classical painters who wanted to achieve a
more complex effect with the limited possibilities of red figure, the
white background gave new prominence to the glaze lines.
This pyxis shows a big accomplishment for an artist back then and how creative they could be. I chose this piece of art because of the structure and detail. It stood out from the others and the color choice fits it very well. Also i feel as though its a very different piece of art, compared to art today.
This here is a similar vase ,which used the same style of painting and similar technique. Also this vase was used for funerals ,and to pour libations during religious rituals.I think that the artist back then were more passionate about the art work, then some artist today. I love the detail and sharpness in the painting also the vase, an for someone to be able to create such a masterpiece by hand is amazing.
I am also a fan of the white ground pottery. It is a shame so much of it did not last and these are reproductions. I like the way that the Greeks framed their stories with very geometric bands.
ReplyDeleteI think it's especially interesting how you can almost see what each of the characters in the piece are saying to each other in both pieces. It's always fascinated me how the Greeks would do more than pose the characters in their artwork; they would also give them words too, especially when it comes to pottery. It just adds another layer to the story, since you can actually know what the characters say on top of seeing what they're doing.
